I was fortunate to have been able to squeeze in one last congenial visit to my favorite Manhattan smoking bar, Karma, on March 14, the Saturday before everything shut down due to the Corona-virus.  I cut it even closer with my last haircut, making it into the barber the last day before New York State declared all “non-essential” businesses closed.  They had the great wisdom to designate liquor stores as “essential.” So thereafter all actual social life came to halt.  People stayed home and worked from home if they could.  Others, who were in essential sectors did work, while a … Continue reading →

Ich hatte Glück, als es mir gelang, am 14. März, dem Samstag vor dem Coronavirus-Lockdown, noch einen letzten netten Besuch im Karma, meiner Lieblings-Raucherkneipe in Manhattan, einzuschieben. Bei meinem letzten Haarschnitt war die Sache sogar noch knapper, als ich es gerade so zum Frisör schaffte, bevor der Staat New York einen Tag später sämtliche „nicht lebenswichtigen“ Geschäfte schloss. Allerdings besaßen sie die große Weisheit, Schnapsläden als „lebensnotwendig“ zu klassifizieren. In der Folge kam schließlich das gesamte soziale Leben zum Stillstand. I live in Long Island, a suburban area adjacent to New York City. New Yorkers pride themselves on their grit, toughness and sophistication. Ich lebe in Long Island, einem Vorstadtbezirk in der Nachbarschaft von New York. New Yorker brüsten sich gerne ihres Schneids, ihrer Zähigkeit und ihrer Raffinesse. Die „Stadt, die niemals schläft“ ist auch bekannt für ihre kosmopolitischen Freizeitbeschäftigungen. Man findet dort Nahrungsmittel aus aller Welt und Nachtclubs für wirklich jeden Geschmack. June is pride month and all over the world, many localities will explode with rainbow flags and parades of scantily-dressed people celebrating the struggles of the LGBTQ community. It commemorates the Stonewall Rebellion of June 1969, when members of the gay community fought back and demanded their right to be who they were and enjoy themselves publicly as they saw fit. Juni ist der Pride Month (von Pride = Stolz) und viele Örtlichkeiten auf der ganzen Welt sind wieder in Regenbogenflaggen getaucht, und Paraden leichtbekleideter Leute haben feiern den Kampf der LGBTQ-Gemeinschaft. Anlass ist hierbei der Stonewall-Aufstand vom Juni 1969, als Mitglieder der Schwulen-Community sich gewehrt und das Recht eingefordert haben, so zu sein, wie sie sind, und in sich in der Öffentlichkeit zu amüsieren, wie es ihnen passt. Christoph versucht mich schon eine ganze Weile dazu zu bewegen, etwas für die Seite Smokingbandits zu schreiben, doch wie man es von mir gewohnt ist, habe ich die Sache immer wieder aufgeschoben. Das liegt wohl daran, dass ich meine stetig nachlassenden Energien lieber zum Angriff auf und zur Überwältigung von Antiraucherrhetorik einsetze als zu den bereits Bekehrten zu predigen … Es gibt durchaus Sträuße, die ich mit einigen Angehörigen der Raucherrechtsbewegung ausfechten könnte – aber dazu ist auch ein anderes Mal noch Zeit. Among the indispensable attributes in caricatures of the ruthless capitalist was – next to top hat and pinstripe suit – always a cigar. Although the greedy bloodsuckers and their political accomplices in reality no longer resemble this, you can still find this type in current cartoons, for example, here and here. A fact that is conveniently brushed under the table is that even inconsiderate communists relished the cigar. Who does not immediately think of Fidel Castro and Che Guevara? Zu den unverzichtbaren Attributen in Karikaturen des rücksichtslosen Kapitalisten gehörte neben Zylinder und (Nadelstreifen)Anzug stets die Zigarre. So sehen die gierigen Blutsauger und deren politische Erfüllungsgehilfen in der Realität zwar schon länger nicht mehr aus, dennoch findet man auch in aktuellen Cartoons noch diesen Typus, zum Beispiel hier und hier. Gerne fällt dabei unter den Tisch, dass auch rücksichtslosen Kommunisten die Zigarre mundete. Wer denkt nicht an Fidel Castro und Che Guevara?
